What is the issue surrounding E911?

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

The FCC set a regulatory mandate, to have taken effect in November of 2005, to do with 9-1-1 calling.  The effective date was delayed until a further ruling in early 2006, so it is important to keep checking this site, or by calling a representative of IP5280, for critical updates.  Because Because not all VoIP provider services offer emergency calling, some people with VoIP phone service cannot make this call if they find themselves in an emergency. Enhanced 9-1-1, known as E911, is available, but it does not work like regular 9-1-1. Your location, especially if you have a wireless connection will likely not be transmitted to the emergency call center, and so if you cannot speak to give an address, it will take longer for help to arrive. This is especially true if the customer is traveling and away from her or his home base. This has been a problem with cell phone users (although it is being addressed). In order to help fix this problem, the FCC has required all VoIP providers to begin offering E911 to subscribers. They are also required to mention somewhere that E911 will not work the same as traditional 9-1-1.
